Ladies Auxiliary
The Westmoreland Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary was organized on May 4, 1951 at the Grange Hall on Main Street in Westmoreland. There were 14 women present for the initial meeting. Mrs. Lillian Smith was chosen as the first President of the Auxiliary. The charter was open until September 5, 1951.
"The main objective of the auxiliary is to assist the Westmoreland Fire Department in any way possible." Their initial function was to serve meals at the annual Old Home Days of the Fire Department to be held in July. The Auxiliarys first year saw many activities such as cleaning, repairing and refurbishing the town hall which the fire Department and Auxiliary used as a meeting place. There was two public Dinners, a Fire Chiefs banquet, card party and bake sales.
In early 1952 the first marching uniforms were ordered. The biggest money making project over the years was the food booth at the firemans field days. In 1960 the Auxiliary ordered and donated to the town road signs at a cost of $700 which were installed by the Highway Department. The Auxiliary also contributed to the construction of the new firehouse on Main Street.
